Hello Reader,
Happy Pride Month! This month, I want to celebrate the ways that LGBTQ+ communities express themselves, both personally and in business and how this can be the only strategy you need for "disruption."
What is disruption? Disruption is the strategy for how many much smaller, up-and-coming start-ups and companies challenge bigger, and more established businesses.
Think Airbnb challenging bigger and more established hotel chains. Or perhaps Uber challenging the taxi and transportation industry. And let's not forget Netflix disrupting the video rental industry.
Basically, being a disruptor in any entrepreneurial venture is 99.9% always a success in business.
So let me tell you the strategy that YOU can deploy to also be a disruptor.
Self-Expression. PERIOD.
Essentially-BE YOURSELF!
I've always struggled with how I'm showing up in my industry and the business world; especially because it’s tough figuring out how to be myself when I have so many preconceived notions about what entrepreneurship looks like.
If you have preconceived notions of what your industry is like and those notions do not align with the way you express yourself, THAT is an opportunity for you to be that disruptor.
But a common challenge is when we get caught up in how others perceive us. Will they see us as professional and competent? Should we change the way we dress or speak or express ourselves so that we can be taken seriously?
As a business coach, I definitely didn’t feel that a woman like me belonged in that industry.
But with time, I've come to realize that letting go of any preconceived notions I had was key and ultimately an opportunity for disruption.
Your appearance or speech or however you choose to self-express should be your secret weapon!
If you're a new entrepreneur in the LGBTQ+ community struggling with self-expression—whether in your content, writing, or self-promotion—remember to be yourself. Focus on how you can show up authentically and help others with your unique skills.
I know it's easier said than done, but start by:
- Finding joy in your work.
- Being confident in your knowledge and
- Always rooting yourself in your desire to help others.
Ultimately, if my mission is to redefine the way that we see entrepreneurship, then we HAVE to be ourselves! And in my eyes, we are disruptors in our own right.
Be proud of your uniqueness and the different ways you show up. The more “you,”the better.
